Abstract

This chapter discusses the persecution of Christians. Topics covered include Nero's instigation of the first ‘official’ persecution of Christianity and Christians; a correspondence between Pliny the Younger and the emperor Trajan, which illustrates the ad hoc methods used to persecute Christians; lapsing and apostatising Christians; and the so-called ‘great persecution’ of Christians in ad under the emperor Diocletian.
