Abstract

Aim: Incidences of cardiovascular disease are 25-50% higher in patients with periodontitis with respect to individuals with healthy periodontium. The Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway is a well-recognised facilitator of atherosclerotic plaque progression, and is reported to enhance monocyte adhesion and invasion of the vessel wall. We hence hypothesized that periodontal pathogens activate Wnt/β-catenin signalling in monocytes and thereby accelerate formation of atherosclerotic lesions.
