Abstract

ABSTRACT Purpose of this review Orthodontic tooth movement requires a careful understanding of and consideration for the biological boundaries in terms of soft and hard tissue to obtain the best orthodontic result while maintaining a healthy periodontium. Respect for these considerations will help minimize undesired side effects. The purpose of this article is to provide a review on periodontal intervention that may be required before, during or after orthodontic treatment with either hard tissue, soft tissue or a combination of both. Recent findings With the increase in utilization of CBCT imaging, it becomes more essential to evaluate the patients in all three planes of space for orthodontic purposes. In cases where the profile does not allow for extraction, non-extraction therapy with dental alveolar arch expansion has been presented by many clinicians as an alternative option for these patients. The use of adjunctive periodontal augmentation procedures helps expand the envelope of discrepancy and provides the added benefit of post orthodontic stability for those cases. Summary The use of hard and soft tissue grafting procedures helps with expanding the range of orthodontic treatment without the risk of undesired periodontal outcomes during orthodontic treatment.
