Abstract

GELIDIUM CARTILAGINEUM' (L.) Gaill. grows at and below the low tide belt, where changes in temperature and light are much reduced and desiccation never occurs. Morphological alternation of generations occurs in the life cycle of this perennial red alga, and its gametophyte generation is dioecious (Kylin, 1928); tetrasporic, antheridial and cystocarpic plants are morphologically similar and macroscopically distinguishable (fig. 1) after considerable experience.
