Abstract
The time decay of weak shock waves in shock tubes is studied analytically and experimentally. The analysis is based on a balance between the rate of change of energy of the main flow, and the rate at which energy is dissipated at the walls of the tube and at the shock. The experiments consist of measuring the time decay of weak shock waves in a conventional shock tube, and yield results which confirm the decay trend predicted by the analysis.
