Supporting women with their emotional wellbeing is a core midwifery skill. Midwives have a pivotal role in early intervention and prevention by screening for mental health and psychosocial vulnerabilities, providing women with resources and referring them on to appropriate services as needed. It has been identified that midwives frequently lack the confidence and perceived competence to offer emotional care to women and require ongoing professional development in their knowledge of perinatal mental health, communication and assessment skills, and their attitudes to mental illness.1
