Abstract

Thirty minutes after infusion of cats with 2 g/kg of urea in saline, there was a significant increase of sodium, potassium and total protein in perilymph and cerebrospinal fluid, although there was little change in the concentration of these substances in serum. This concentrating effect on the perilymph and cerebrospinal fluid may represent a loss of water caused by an osmotic imbalance produced by the hypertonic urea.
