Abstract

The squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is a rare benign odontogenic tumor first described by Pullon et al.1 This lesion is thought to arise from the epithelial rests of Malassez. Rests of Malassez represent remnants of Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath, an epithelial membrane that helps to guide root formation. While these epithelial rests may be found anywhere within the periodontal ligament, they are most numerous on the lateral root surface. Therefore, the typical radiographic presentation is a triangular radiolucent defect involving the lateral root surface of erupted teeth.
