Abstract

The sudden onset of severe pleuritic pain in the left or right low anterior chest, associated with a low-grade fever, leukocytosis, a normal electrocardiogram, and the sudden appearance of a juxtacardiac mass on chest roentgenogram, should strongly suggest the diagnosis of pericardial fat necrosis. Surgical excision has been symptomatically curative and probably continues to be the treatment of choice because of the need to exclude neoplasm in the differential diagnosis. The present report documents an additional case of pericardial fat necrosis and reviews those previously reported.
