Abstract

Pericardial effusion is a common clinical entity in dogs with the majority of cases either being associated with cardiac malignancy or being termed idiopathic. An aetiological diagnosis for the majority of cases is not determined. This entity commonly causes both right-backwards heart failure and forward heart failure as a result of cardiac tamponade and must be relieved by mechanical drainage of the effusion, medical therapy being of undetermined role in this setting. This article briefly reviews the presentation, diagnosis and management of pericardial effusion in dogs.
