Abstract

The management of patients with perianal skin loss and/or perianal wounds presents a challenging clinical situation. Although the goal is to maintain skin integrity in a patient undergoing a surgical procedure in the perianal area, the nature of the area—moist mucosa, bacteria from the stool as well as generalized moisture, and uneven skin and tissue planes—make care of the patient with perianal disease challenging. This article will present options to protect and heal the perianal skin from moisture or drainage and review principles of wound management related to wounds in the perianal area.
