Abstract

My PhD hypothesis aims to discover the links between imagining and creating in the Drama aesthetic. Within this framework I have been exploring strategies that allow groups of students to devise performances around a written Drama essay topic. I have called this teaching methodology Performing an Essay. The group devised performances have to theatrically demonstrate the styles, thematic concerns, dramatic forms and social and cultural context from which the topic emerged. During this process the students individually, and as a group, write their essays and use the essays as a source in their process work and final performance. Initial observations suggest that this approach widens the kinaesthetic world for senior drama students.
