Abstract

Taking rubber powder of ramp waste tires as the modifier, the modified asphalt tests of routine performance, dynamic shear rheometer, and bending beam rheometer were conducted with three particle sizes of 20 mesh, 40 mesh, and 80 mesh, and different rubber powder mixing amounts of 10%,15%,20% and 25%. The performance of modified asphalt of high temperature and low temperature is affected by the particle size and mixing amount of rubber powder studied. Also, the modification mechanism of rubber powder was researched from experiments of fluorescence microscope, infrared spectrum, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicate that modified asphalt performances of anti-rutting, anti-cracking, and anti-fatigue are improved after the rubber powder is modified; the rubber powder modification effect of ramp tires is superior to meridian tires; the improvement effect of the penetration index, anti-rutting factor, and elastic recovery of modified asphalt is better under greater particle size rubber powder; and the low temperature performance is similar to that of smaller particle size. There are physical and chemical actions between rubber powder and base asphalt, which play an important role in the colloid system and temperature stability. According to the performance-price ratio , the optimal particle size is 20 mesh and the optimum mixing amount is 20%.
