Abstract

The present research paper performance of a only one basin and one slope solar at rest with fly ash particles is improved by cylindrical fins (0.003 m diameter, 0.03 m length) which are effectively use to add to the surface area of the basin and evaporation rate of water. The fins also reduce the time required for preheating the saline water. In this work, the fins are attached with the basin to influence the productivity of the thermal energy storage medium (fly ash partiles-3 kg) solar still and other parameters like water temperature and vapour temperature etc. The experimental works are carried out in passive solar still for various quantity of water to find the optimum value. Then, the experiments have been conducted using fly ash particles with optimum quantity of water and varying the number of fins. Finally, the performance of the solar still using fly ash particles with optimum fins is compared to without fins below the similar climate condition. The customized solar still with optimum fins configuration produces 41% more distilled water.
