Abstract

Free space optical communication (FSOC) has shown significant potential in the small satellite’s bandwidth communication link. However, the performance of small satellite FSOC link decays greatly by pointing error. This study presents and simulating verifies that adopting flat-topped beam to replace conventional Gaussian beam can mitigate the impacts of pointing error on a small satellite FSOC link. In addition, a novel contribution to the literature has been made by deducing theoretical expressions for the link performance design of flat-topped beam-based small satellite FSOC. The next generation of small satellite FSOC link could adopt flat-topped beam.
