Abstract

A finite element model of the response of exfoliated graphite to stress is used to predict the decline in radial sealing stress as a function of sealing ring wear. The model which results allows the number of stem cycles to leak to be calculated, and from this result, an optimum initial clamping stress can be calculated. However, in view of the simplifications made in deriving the model, this stress should probably be treated as an upper limit in most cases.
