Abstract

Performance approximations for type II hybrid ARQ systems using a concatenation of an inner convolutional code with an outer Reed-Solomon code are presented. The hybrid type II ARQ systems have been shown to be very efficient mechanisms for transmitting data packets. The concatenation of convolutional and Reed-Solomon codes provides one of the most powerful codes available with bandwidth expansion of approximately 2. The performance estimates show a transmission efficiency for the concatenated type II hybrid ARQ to be higher than 3/4 rate FEC, 1/2 rate FEC, type II hybrid ARQ with BCH codes, or nonhybrid ARQ with Eb/No less than 8 dB. >
