Abstract

A steel-reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular column is a type of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column reinforced by embedded steel profile. The inner carbon steel tube reinforced square concrete-filled stainless steel tubular column (SR-CFSST) has not been systematically investigated. In this project, stub composite columns with various experimental parameters were tested as loaded in axial monotonic compression, considering the effects of the concrete strength, column size and wall thickness of the steel tubes. The mechanical behaviour of stub columns was analysed in terms of ultimate load-bearing capacity, strength index, ductility, and failure modes. The calculation methods in five codes, including GB 50936, DBJ/T 13–51, Eurocode 4, ANSI/AISC 360 and AIJ, which are widely used for ordinary CFST stub columns, were compared. Finally, a simplified calculation method for the SR-CFSST stub columns was proposed for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity. The predicted results agree well with test results and the simplified calculation method can be used to design SR-CFSST stub columns loaded monotonically in axial compression.
