Abstract

SYNOPSIS The majority of those countries which receive the highest of solar radiation are also amongst the lowest income countries of the world. For solar water heating to be used on any reasonable scale in these countries the selling prices of the units must be compatable with the local salaries but at the same time give good water heating performance. Sierra Leone is one of the smaller African states and has high levels of radiation for much of the year (Latitude 8°29′N). The collectors developed and tested prove to give good characteristics and there is much Interest amongst the urban population. Simple manufacturing techniques make them suitable for local production and are therefore several times cheaper than models which have been imported. Several solar water heater designs have been manufactured and investigated in tests during 1981 and 1982.
