Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the performance of radio over free space optical communication (RoFSO) system with spatial diversity reception technology (SDRT) operating over the gamma-gamma (GG) atmospheric turbulence channel. The bit error rate (BER) and outage probability of the system have been derived in closed form expressions using the generalized power series. For the same aperture size of the detectors, the SDRT can significantly improve the BER performance and outage probability of the RoFSO system. For example, the BER and the outage probability will decrease from ∼6.6×10−4 to ∼2.4×10−6 and from ∼2.3×10−4 to ∼4.9×10−6 for using an extra photodetector (PD) at SNR=30dB in strong atmospheric turbulence regime.
