Abstract

This paper presents numerical results for a variable-rate forward error correction (FEC) coding scheme that is based on rate-compatible punctured convolution (RCPC) coding. The rate-compatibility restriction is imposed on the encoder to insure that a single encoder/ decoder may be used to provide a range of code rates. It is demonstrated that RCPC coding can potentially support a broad range of quality of service (QoS) requirements for multimedia services on future asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)-based wireless networking systems. If QoS specifications are too severe for a significant portion of the wireless protocol data unit (PDU)), then FEC at the physical layer may not be sufficient to provide the desired results. In such cases, data link control (DLC) sublayer feedback schemes can be combined with RCPC coding to form a hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ)/FEC protocol, that still satisfies the rate-compatibility criterion.
