Abstract

The error rate performance of PRML system in perpendicular magnetic recording by a multi-layered main-pole head is studied. First, the SNRs at the discrimination point are obtained for partial response (PR) systems whose taransfer functions are (1+D2)(1−Dm) (m = 1,2,···). Then, the bit-error rates of bit-gy-bit decoding exhibits teh best performance, ond that Viterbi decording and PMRL systems for these PR systems are obtained. The results show that among these PR systems PR(1,0,0,0,−1) system with bit-by-bit decoding for PR(1,0,1,0,−1,0,−1) system (PRML system) achieves a large improvement of SNR over bit-by-bit decoding.
