Abstract

Expressions which are useful to evaluate the performance of transmission systems with an optical amplifier are presented. The transmission distances of pre-amplifier configurations and in-line amplifier configurations are discussed and compared. For the pre-amplifier configuration, it is revealed that there is a certain level of gain beyond which transmission distance ceases to increase under the increase of amplifier gain. However, it is shown that it is possible to further extend this upper limit of transmission distance by using the in-line configuration. The optimum location for an in-line amplifier to achieve the maximum transmission distance is suggested. The transmission distances which are extended by remotely pumped in-line amplifiers are discussed.
