Abstract

(...) A 2-yr field study (1984-1985) was conducted in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas (26 o N latitude), in which selected, commercially available Cynodon cultivars («Brazos», «Coastal», «NK37», «Tifton 44», «Tifton 68», plus a local ecotype, «Star») were evaluated. Irrigation (4 in.) and fertilizer (75 lb N/acre) were applied every 42 d and forage harvested at either 21- or 42-d intervals throughout the study. Mean forage production averaged 11230 and 8611 lb/acre in 1984 and 1985 respectively, with the 42-d harvest frequency producing 38% more herbage than the plots cut at 21-d intervals (11258 and 8599 lb/acre, respectively)
