Abstract

Axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motors are used as drive motors for hybrid vehicles due to their high torque/power density and high efficiency. This technology makes the use of soft magnetic composites (SMC) attractive for both manufacturing and performance. SMC has the characteristics of low eddy current loss, convenient processing, low magnetic permeability, low mechanical strength. An additional dc magnetic field excitation coil is added to the motor to overcome the shortcomings of the low torque density of the SMC, which ensures the high performance of the motor. The performance of axial flux hybrid excitation motor (AFHEM) is evaluated based on finite element analysis (FEA) method. The analysis results show that the proposed motor is able to achieve high torque density and wide speed range, which are suitable for hybrid electric vehicles.
