Abstract

The goal of the current review paper is to classify the available ionic liquid compounds that have been used as effective and green (environmentally friendly) corrosion inhibitors in corrosive aqueous media during the last two decades, as well as to investigate their corrosion inhibition properties. The ionic liquids are classified into several groups based on imidazolium, triazolium, thiazolium, indolium, pyrrolidinium, pyridinium, picolinium, piperidinium, thiazinium, pyridazinium, ammonium, amino acid, phosphonium, chitosan, acrylamide, and sulfonium. The studied corrosive media are including diluted acidic, basic, and salty solutions, as well as watery media. Moreover, the investigated samples include many metals and alloys, such as iron, cast iron, stainless steel, MS, CS, copper, Al, brass, and composite. In this review, the corrosion inhibition behaviors of the various ionic liquids have been studied. Further, the details, such as the used techniques, the adsorption nature, the adsorption isotherm models, and the maximum corrosion inhibition efficiencies are provided in the tables. The results of this study revealed that almost all the ionic liquid compounds show good corrosion inhibition behavior due to their ability of adsorption at the interface of metal/ alloy specimens and corrosive media. Furthermore, the mechanism of corrosion inhibition of ionic liquid compounds has been featured at the end of the paper.
