Abstract

The maintenance of nutritional status is essential for the optimization of Warfighter physical and cognitive performance; diminished nutritional status has been linked to degraded performance, injury, and poor health outcomes. The objective of the Thematic Session titled “Performance Nutrition: An International Perspective” is to outline and summarize nutrition perspectives and primary research from a series of nations exploring nutritional requirements for the optimization of Warfighter performance. Speakers will detail observational and interventional studies conducted in laboratory, field, and operational environments contributing to the development of Warfighter nutritional standards. The impact of nutritional interventions, including the use of dietary supplements and sustainable approaches, on physical and cognitive performance will be highlighted. Speakers will conclude by providing examples by which nutrition research studies were utilized to develop national or international nutrition requirements and the optimization of military feeding platforms, to include snacks, rations, and garrison feeding policies.
