Abstract

AbstractThis paper introduces gammatone filters which are area and energy efficient, implemented using stochastic computation. Gammatone filters are especially used in hearing-aid devices for its performance improvement. By using stochastic computation, complex computations are done with a simple hardware by bit-wise operations. A multiplier of a filter is changed by a logic gate using stochastic computation to decrease the hardware area and to increase the performance. Synchronous system has a limitation of clock skew and power dissipation which is reduced by asynchronous systems. For multibit asynchronous operations, adder using multiplexor is replaced by parallel asynchronous self-timed adder. Gain balancing techniques and scaling techniques are implemented for improving accuracy and to reduce stochastic bits. As a result, the proposed gammatone filter achieves an area reduction by 30.996% in unipolar technique and by 38% in bipolar technique.KeywordsGammatone filterStochastic computationIIR filter
