Abstract

In this paper, the characteristics of an optoelectronic processing system are clarified in terms of available chip area and processing capability of the comprising subsystems. A parallel processing system composed of multiple processing elements with optical input/output ports is considered and the size and the functionality of each processing element are evaluated. Comparison with a pure-electronic system of the equivalent composition reveals requirement on the comprising subsystems in the optoelectronic system. The result ensures importance of selecting applications in which optical task can be employed dominantly.
