Abstract

Fiber-Wireless (Fiwi) access networks or Hybrid wireless-optical broadband access network (WOBAN) presents a compelling solution for meeting the growing customer demands in access networks. FiWi network provides cost effectiveness, robustness, flexibility, high capacity, reliability and is self organized. In FiWi network, optimal Optical Network Unit (ONU) placement problem is gaining popularity as it enhances network performance in terms of cost efficiency and network throughput. In this paper, we estimate the optimal positions of ONUs considering different variants of Moth-Flame optimization algorithm based on different spiral paths. The variation of cost function (in terms of average distance between users and ONUs) as a function of different configurations of MFO is mapped. The simulation results are obtained for various distributions of wireless mesh routers and ONUs. The extensive simulation reveals that logarithmic spiral path outperforms the Archimedes (arithmetic) and hyperbolic spirals. Archimedes' spiral performs better than hyperbolic spiral.
