Abstract

With advances on Internet of Things (IoT), network and devices management are needed due to the quantity of devices connected to transmit and collect data. IoT management presents the challenge to control and monitoring heterogeneous network elements, physical or logical, that support different protocols and quality of service (QoS) requirements. Devices interoperability and heterogeneity are key management challenges in IoT scenarios. IoT network management has an issue regarding the diversity of protocols and platforms where a comparative evaluation is difficult to perform due to this lack of standardization. This paper presents a performance evaluation study of open source IoT management platforms using the most popular IoT network management protocols considering real environments. For comparison purposes, the real environment of a smart lighting system is used. The evaluation study considers both qualitative and quantitative metrics. Through the collected data, OpenDayLight (ODL) platform presents the best results considering the use of NETCONF and simple network management protocol (SNMP). It natively supports both IoT network and IoT devices management protocols. It is concluded that ODL platform is a modular platform where it is possible configuring the network management protocols appropriately for each scenario, either it is a scenario that requires real-time management and energy saving or a scenario with low response time and large transfer rate.
