Abstract

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of hetero-geneous networks with physical cell identity (cell ID) operation of small cells. We consider the two cell ID modes standardized in long term evolution-advanced (LTE-A) systems, the single cell ID mode and the different cell ID mode. First, we investigate the user equipment (UE) throughput according to the cell ID mode and the distance between small cells. We also investigate the effect of the numbers of UEs and small cells to the UE throughput. Based on the investigation, the adaptive cell ID mode is discussed to utilize the benefits of the single and different cell ID modes. The UE throughputs are evaluated based on the system level simulations compliant with LTE-A systems.
