Abstract

Increased demands for the multimedia service has coincided with a spread deployment of the 4G wireless communication systems like LTE and WiMAX which use orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) as wireless access technology. However, the performance degradation of cell-edge users is becoming issues due to signal interference. To solve this problem, base station (BS) cooperation schemes are studied and its results show the performance improvements. However, current BS cooperation researches and results focus on only the physical link level without a consideration of the network-wise performance. Consequently, it could degrade the network-wise system performance due to overheads of control messages and duplications of the resource use. Thus this paper evaluates the efficiency of cooperative communication networks and addresses the necessity of the scheme for the cooperative communication considered the total network performance. The simulation results show that the throughput for cell edge users increase up to 340% when the users exploit 3-BS cooperative communication, however the total network throughput degrades up to -11% due to the overheads and resource duplications caused by cooperative communications.
