Abstract

In general, Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) have racks of equal sized cells. But they are inadequate and inefficient at meeting the various sizes of customers' demands in today's business environment. Higher utilization of warehouse storage can be achieved by using AS/RS with racks of unequal sized cells. In this paper, models for estimating the performance of racks with unequal sized cells under randomized storage assignments, and single and dual command are developed. The models developed could be very useful for quick estimation of the performance of AS/RS to be built and the optimal design of AS/RS.
