Abstract

The paper presents an overview of the performance enhancement associated with hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HyFRC) when exposed to mechanical loading as well as environmental loading conditions such as corrosion and alkali silica reaction. Composite steel and fiber-reinforced concrete testing is carried out to highlight the influence of crack control in HyFRC on internal confinement and tension stiffening. HyFRC with its multi-scale crack control provides an optimal material for structural applications, such as for example bridge column, in which concrete might be expected to face tension and compression as part of a common service load. In regards to expansive deterioration processes such as corrosion and alkali silica reaction, the control of splitting cracks in HyFRC enhances the durability and service life of concrete structures.
