Abstract

Various kinds of EM simulations are performed to investigate the stopband characteristics of PBG structures and to verify their usefulness for performance enhancement of antennas. The designed PBG structure at 18 GHz is shown to increase a microstrip antenna gain by 2.6 dB in the E-plane, and to enhance isolation between two patch antennas by 7 dB. The same PBG structure is found to behave as a PMC surface (reflection coefficient=1), thus making a horizontal monopole antenna possible. The designed PBG structure (or high impedance surface) may be used to increase isolation of mobile communication repeater antennas.
