Abstract

ABSTRACT The performance of two different table tennis balls (i.e. a seamless poly ball and a seamed celluloid ball) is compared both experimentally and numerically. No significant difference is found in the coefficients of restitution of the two balls in free-fall impact tests onto a flat rubber surface. However, the celluloid ball has a faster rotational speed on serving, while the poly ball has a greater rebound angle. However, on serving, the celluloid ball has a faster spinning speed than the poly ball, while the poly ball has a greater rebound angle. In addition, for a given spin rotation speed and serving speed, the celluloid ball has a faster sink velocity than the seamless poly ball.
