Abstract

The performances of hybrid time-division multiplexing/wavelength-division multiplexing (TDM/WDM) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technologies are comparatively studied in 10 Gb s− 1 systems. Hybrid TDM/WDM modulation is superior compared with WDM and with the increase of distance, this advantage turns bigger. It is an applicable technology for dense 10 Gb s− 1 signal's ultra-long haul transmissions. A higher pulse power upgrades both system's performances. Cycle duty and channel number have little effect on Q. Both systems can obtain better performances for the cases of wider pulse and less channel number. It is also demonstrated that the impact of channel spacing on XPM intensity modulation between 10 Gb s− 1 return zero (RZ) pulses is small. The decreases of dispersion and nonlinear coefficients will benefit the systems' operations.
