Abstract

A comparison between the performance of extended class IV partial response maximum likelihood detection (EPRML) and peak detection (PD) in high density digital magnetic recording is presented. The recording was done on a thin film disk using separate heads for writing and reading. The linear recording densities ranged from 117 to 177 kbpi. The results show that EPRML outperforms PD by at least 20%. >
