Abstract

Six worsted whipcords were manufactured with the following fiber content: all fine wool (considered standard), all medium wool, medium wool-viscose rayon or -nylon, and coarse wool-viscose rayon or -nylon. The comparative performance was evaluated from physical properties of new fabric, swatches of unused fabric drycleaned (20 or' 60 times) ; and fabric from trousers worn by lotal delivery truck drivers for 20 and 60 weeks, re spectively (weekly drycleanings). liven though there were slight differences in vautes for air permeability, stiffness, crease recovery, abrasion resistance, breaking strength. elongation, and toughness, from a practical standpoint the coarser 56-58's wool could be substituted for fine 64's wool. Although not quite as good as the all-wool, the 3 4 wool-1 4, viscose rayon blends, were acceptable substitutes; and the blends containing 1/4 nylon were more durable than wool-viscose rayon or al-wool. Failing of fabrics was due to service wear, not to drycleaning.
