Abstract

Gated Image Intensifiers, used in conjunction with solid state image sensors, for lowlight level and high speed imaging have greatly enhanced performance characteristics of solid state cameras, especially the areas of luminous gain and improved spectral response. This paper reviews operation parameters of the Second Generation Proximity Focused Image Intensifier used in this application. Spectral response characteristics of different mul-tialkali (Na 2 KSb:Cs) photocathodes will be discussed. Responses are available from the UV (200nm) to the near IR (850nm). The tradeoffs between efficiency and persistence of various output phosphors and the spectral matching to the solid state image sensor array is considered. The role of the microchannel plate (MCP) as the primary gain mechanism of the image intensifier and its effect on resolution and noise is also discussed. The gating of this device, in the areas of design and effects on performance, will be reviewed.
