Abstract

Code division multiple access is a potential issue for future optical communications. However, beat noise due to the photo-detection process is a strong limitation to the system performance. Our contribution in this paper is to develop a novel theoretical analysis of worst beat noise interference pattern which permits rapidly assessing an upper bound of the error probability. Thanks to this model, we study the performance of a 2 dimensional OCDMA system in presence of beat noise. We investigate the tradeoffs between the BER performance, the available data rate and the system parameters: code characteristics and optical source requirements.
