Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper presents the suitability of geogrids made from areca leaf sheaths, as soil reinforcement. The performance of areca geogrids was evaluated through the model footing tests and the same has been compared with the performance of synthetic polymer geogrids as well as coir geotextiles. The effect of embedment depth of areca geogrid within the sand bed on its bearing capacity was presented along with the behavior of multilayered areca geogrid-reinforced sand beds. The performance comparison of areca geogrid-reinforced sand beds with coir geogrid and polymer geogrid-reinforced sand beds showed that the areca grids provided improved performance.
