Abstract
SUMMARY Since the end of 1991 BMW produces a new chassis control system for its 8 series coupe, called Active Rear-axle Kinematics (ARK). It is an electrohydraulic rear axle steering system with a speed-dependent transfer function for rear axle steering angle. It improves driving safety in severe steering maneuvers and reduces driver's stress in everyday driving. Its technology includes a comprehensive fail-safe concept which basically constitutes a dual channel design and monitors the proper system operation in a multi-stage comparison starting at the system inputs and ending at its output.
