Abstract

The performance of a lead/scintillator electromagnetic shower calorimeter has been investigated for 0.5-3.0 GeV electrons and pions. The energy resolution (fwhm) for the electrons can be expressed by 0.38/E(GeV)1/2. The cross-section of the module is a trapezium with a height of 300 mm and the two parallel sides (19 and 113 mm) are read-out by two wavelength shifters. The position resolutions were 4-10 mm along the parallel sides and of 2.7-50 mm for the orthogonal direction with an assembly of the three modules. A dose of 1×104 Gy (1 Gy=100 rad) irradiation reduced the optical-attenuation lengths to 33 and 26% of those before irradiation for a plastic scintillator and the wavelength shifter, respectively.
