Abstract

The present work examines the use of a non-edible oil namely honne oil, a new possible source of alternative fuel for diesel engine. The uses of honne oil either in neat form or blended (unheated or preheated) with diesel fuel in diesel engine has not been reported in the literature. The viscosity of honne oil can be reduced by blending it with diesel fuel. Even after blending, viscosity is high as compared to neat diesel. The high viscosity of honne oil blends can be reduced by preheating. The effect of temperature on the viscosity, density, flash point and lower heating of honne oil and its blends has also been investigated. The performance and emission characteristics of unheated honne oil blend (20% honne oil and 80% diesel fuel by volume) are found to be close to neat diesel. The performance and emission characteristics of preheated honne oil blends (10% to 50%) are better than unheated honne oil blends.
