Abstract

In the very signal modulation issue of the promising radio-over-fiber (RoF) system, single sideband (SSB) spectrum formation as well as amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation are usually chosen so as to enhance bandwidth efficiency and simplify system design. It is generally believed that the duty cycle of the original data stream may affect the transmission performance of the ASK modulated signal in fiber channel. Till now, ASK modulation in SSB RoF system with different duty cycle in original data stream has been rarely discussed, and the performance for such system has been seldom analyzed either. In this paper, based on a thorough study on the generation of SSB RoF signal, and the generation of ASK signal modulated on sideband carrying original data wave with different duty cycle, the performance of the whole system affected by the very key index “duty cycle” has been analyzed, and the bit error rate (BER) - duty cycle curve as well as the energy consumption - duty cycle curve of the original data have been discussed in detail so as to give an optimal system design.
