Abstract

In the future, mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is predicted to play more important roles for device communication with self organized infrastructure. Effectiveness of routing protocols and congestion control mechanisms, highly determines the performance of MANET. Previous research in protocol development did not pay much attention in selecting the appropriate protocol on other layers. Therefore, the optimal cooperation between routing and congestion control is not clear. In this paper, we provide analysis and technique for selecting the most appropriate routing protocol to cooperate with congestion control of TCP NewReno. We also evaluate the chosen routing protocol to verify their cooperation with the ADTCP (TCP-Friendly). The experimental results showed that the most suitable routing protocol with congestion control can improve network performance, which are DSR and TCP NewReno. Cooperation between DSR and ADTCP has better performance than DSR with TCP NewReno, because ADTCP has the ability to detect network condition more accurately. Routing protocols and congestion control cooperation still face uncertainty to ensure quality of connection, which cause frequent path break due to mobility. To deal with dynamic changes in network conditions, the developments of protocols require more precise and accurate additional parameters from the physical layer, but with modest complexity for efficiency. Cross-layer is a promising method to improve the cooperation routing protocol and congestion control mechanisms.
