Abstract

Today’s electrical power grid system is a crucial component of production cost for large industrial consumer. The power factor may become poor in an electrical installation because of many non-linear loads is use such as induction motors, power transformer, arc and induction furnace, voltage regulators etc. Low power factor can result in safety problems, high energy cost and poor reliability. The main focus of this study to analyze the influence and advantage of power factor correction. Thus, capacitor banks have been introduced to offset the inductive load. The design and simulation of power factor correction using the MATLAB Simulink is described in this paper. The induction motor has been used to act as a load in the system where it will operate with low power factor. Experimental results have shown that a higher power factor can be achieved after installing a capacitor banks near the load. The power factor which at full load condition improve from 0.68845 to 0.7668. The simulation circuit also perform at various load condition. During the induction motor operates at no-load the power factor is lower than at full load. Therefore, for the better used of electrical equipment and machine with minimum of electrical consumption, the power factor correction would allow the system to restore its power factor close to unity and increase the energy efficiency for economical operation.
