Abstract

Nowadays, the field of photonics is growing fast and creating vast opportunities in various applications such as optical communication systems, integrated optics, optical memories and optical switching elements etc.,. The optical switching devices with low communication latency, reduced coupling length and reduced power consumption become more essential for interconnection of networks in next-generation data centers. Hence, the need to design ultra-fast optical switches plays major role in photonic integrated devices and circuits. Directional Coupler (DC) based on Photonic Crystal (PC) is used to implement all optical switches. In this paper, the various existing architectural designs of optical switch using PC based directional coupler and their corresponding performance metrics are discussed in detail. Further, an attempt has been made to develop a new structural design for directional coupler optical switch by appending certain modifications in the existing design structure in order to improve its output power.
